Send Free SMS From Your Vodafone Mobile

There have been numerous tricks for sending FREE sms from different mobile operators. These tricks or so called Hacks work only for a particular period of time .

All you need to do is :

  • Write the sms in the following format,
SEND Mobile Number Date-Month-Year Time Content
For example, you want to send a sms to Mobile number 9444182217 with content “Hi ! I have found a new sms trick on TechVorm”, then you will write the sms as follows on your mobile phone–

  • After writing the sms in the format given above, just send the sms to 54545 (Toll Free).
Take care of the fact that the Time should be in 24 hours format.

Working GPRS Trick For Vodafone

We have constantly shared tweaks and tricks to enjoy free SMS and GPRS services among various networks and here comes another working trick (as for now) for vodafone subscribers which you may find useful if you want to enjoy free GPRS services.

All you have to do to activate free GPRS is :-

  • Go to GPRS settings in your handset
  • Edit the settings manually by entering the below given codes

Browser: Use UCWEB 6.3

  • Set the above settings as your default and you are done

Surf Internet On Airtel For Free !

Free GPRS setting for Airtel is very difficult to find these days. Everyone wants to surf internet on their mobile devices for free without paying a single penny ! In a previous post written by me some time back on GPRS Trick For Reliance Mobile , i got requests in comments section asking for a similar trick for AIRTEL mobile too. I, therefore decided to write a post on GPRS hack for AIRTEL mobile.

Before providing you with the settings, i would like to tell you that please dont spam the comments section, if these settings dont work for you. These hacks are temporary one’s and may or may not work for you. Such type of hacks are regularly patched by programmers at AIRTEL (And that’s what they are paid for ! ).

Also, i recommend you to take a backup of existing settings, so that you can easily revert back to them.

Following are the settings that you need to input into your respective cell phone(s) :

On the main screen on your Nokia Made mobile phone type in:
*#06# for checking the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity).
*#7780# reset to factory settings.
*#67705646# This will clear the LCD display(operator logo).
*#0000# To view software version.
*#2820# To show Bluetooth device address.
*#746025625# Sim clock allowed status.
#pw+1234567890+1# Shows if sim have restrictions.
*#92702689# takes you to a secret menu where you may find some of the information below:
1. Displays Serial Number.
2. Displays the Month and Year of Manufacture

Lost and stolen mobile phones keep it safe & know what to do if you lose it.

If you lose your mobile phone, or have it stolen, not only do you have to deal with the inconvenience of not having your phone, but you could be paying for someone else�s calls!

PREVENTION

Prevention is better than cure.

Reduce your phone�s appeal to thieves and assist in its recovery if it is lost or stolen:

1) Treat your phone as you would any valuable item: Even if you got your handset as a $0 upfront deal�, this does not reflect its true cost. Handsets are expensive - they can cost more than $1000.

  • Be discrete. Keep your mobile on you. Never put it down in a public place or leave it unattended.
  • Switch to vibrate mode in circumstances where a ring tone might attract the attention of a thief.

2) Use your phone�s security features: Your phone has security features which you can use to stop others using your phone for example, you can set a Personal Identification Number (PIN) number which must be entered before anyone can use the phone. Read your handset User Guide to find out what features your phone has and use them. Even if your phone isn�t stolen, someone might be tempted to borrow your phone and make a few expensive calls without your knowledge.

3) Name it: Some form of personal identification on your phone can deter the would-be thief. Consider engraving your initials on your phone and the battery, and � if you have one also including your driver�s license number.

4) Know your IMEI: Every mobile phone has a unique 15-digit electronic serial number, known as the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. Record your phone�s IMEI number and keep it in a safe place in case your phone is lost or stolen. You can check your IMEI number by dialing *#06#.

5) Insurance: Don�t assume your phone is covered in your (or your parent�s) home contents insurance. Check and consider insuring it separately, if necessary. Remember that even if you got the phone for ‘$0 upfront�, this doesn�t mean it was free it means the cost was absorbed in the overall contract price. You may not be able to get a replacement phone for $0 upfront.

LOST OR STOLEN

If your phone is lost or stolen:

6) Notify your network carrier AND the police immediately in the event of loss or theft. Tell them your IMEI number and any other identifying features on your phone (e.g. engraved initials). Your carrier can use this number to block your phone from all networks once you report the phone lost or stolen, making it useless to any thief. Importantly, this also ensures you�re not paying for any calls made by the thief. If the handset is subsequently found, the IMEI block can be easily removed as long as you can prove you�re the original, rightful owner of the phone.

Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)

In a Mobile Network, several constraints are used to deliver wireless data. For wireless, the handheld devices should be portable, have limited size and weight, which results in reduced memory capacity, less power CPU and reduced user interface. Wireless networks also have limited bandwidth, longer coverage and a degree of reliability. The wireless handheld devices can access Internet applications only if all these constraints are carefully addressed.

To address these constraints carefully, In June 1997, the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) forum was founded. The development of this forum was important in wireless industry.

WAP forum has developed a set of wireless protocol specifications and offer these protocols to many industry groups. The result is that many mobile operators and handset manufacturers have joined the WAP-enabled devices. Before WAP-enabled devices, wireless data services were not successful. So, to improve wireless data market, WAP is introduced with limited computing and memory capacities, WAP allows a Web browser in handheld devices to access Internet.

WAP Architecture

WAP architecture consists of three operational units.

  • WAP handset or handheld device

  • WAP Gateway

  • Origin server or Web server

The WAP handset or handheld and origin server communicates with each other through Mobile Network. WAP handset received the contents and these contents are encoded in binary format of Wireless Markup Language (WML) for efficient transmission. A WAP Gateway, which is located between Internet/server and mobile/WAP handset, receives these contents and decodes them from binary format to text format. This text format is then forward to origin server. The origin server decides what to retrieve from the text format. The Uniform Resource Locator (URL) of the server specifies the files and these files are transferred to WAP Gateway through Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). The WAP Gateway encodes the HTTP header into WML byte code and then this result is transferred to WAP handset. A Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) filter is also located between origin server and WAP Gateway. It acts like a translator and translates the HTML format into Wireless Markup Language (WML) format, which is used in wireless applications.

WAP Models

For handset devices WAP defines a user-interface model. In WAP handset devices up and down scroll keys are used for navigation. For menu option selection and context-specific functions Soft Keys are used. Some examples of WAP phone models are following.

  • Nokia 7110

  • Ericsson R320

  • Ericsson MC 218

GSM 900/1800 dual-band supports these models as well. These models are equipped with large display, micro browser, Voice memo, full graphics, calendars, contact manager and a complete Chinese interface.

WAP Protocols

WAP Protocols are defined in terms of WAP Protocol stack.

  • Wireless Datagram Protocol (WDP)

  • Wireless Transport Layer Security (WTLS)

  • Wireless Transaction Protocol (WTP)

  • Wireless Session Protocol (WSP)

  • Wireless Application Environment (WAE)

1. Wireless Datagram Protocol (WDP): The WAP transport layer is defined by the WDP. To the upper-layer protocols of the WAP, the WDP offers consistent services and with it these layers can function independently of the underlying layers.

2. Wireless Transport Layer Security (WTLS): The WAP security layer is defined by the WTLS. By using encryption and decryption techniques, the WTLS provides unchanged and uncorrupted data integrity.

3. Wireless Transaction Protocol (WTP): The WAP transaction layer is defined by the WTP. WTP is similar to Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), which controls that traffic of data and also saves processing and memory costs in WAP handset. By using retransmission and acknowledgments techniques it provides reliability.

4. Wireless Session Protocol (WSP): The WAP session layer is defined by the WSP. WSP supports client and server for exchange of contents, by establishing a session from client to server and releases the session and saves the power of WAP handset, when it is idle.

5. Wireless Application Environment (WAE): The WAP application layer is defined by the WAE. To efficiently built applications it provides an environment for mobile operators. It also defines a set of formats, images, phone book records and calendar information.

Advantages of WAP

WAP Protocols are specially designed to reduce the amount of information, which is delivered through wireless network of limited bandwidth. To deliver the same information WAP uses 50 percent less packets as compare to HTTP/TCP.

Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM)

GSM network is designed by using digital wireless technology. It offers compatible wireless services to all mobile users in all over the world. The basic requirements for GSM are following:

  • Services

  • Quality of services and security

  • Radio frequency utilization

  • Network

Services: The services, which are provided by the system, should be potable to all Mobile Stations or Mobile Phones so that it can b used in all over the world.

Quality of services and security: The quality of both voice and data services of GSM should be good. The voice data is encoded in digital form by using a modulation technique i.e.Gussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK).The security features should be provided by the system to protect the network against unauthorized users.

Radio frequency utilization: The system should use the available band of frequencies (For uplink: 890-915MHz & For downlink: 935-960MHz) efficiently.

Network: Network designers manage the identification and numbering plans while switching and mobility management based upon signaling system i.e. Signaling System Number 7(SS7).

GSM Architecture

The main component groups of GSM architecture are:

  • Mobile Stations (MSs)

  • Base Station System (BSS)

  • Network and Switching Subsystem (NSS)

Mobile Stations (MSs):

The Mobile Station (MS) consist of two operational parts.

  1. Mobile Equipment (ME)

  2. Subscriber Identity Module (SIM)

Mobile Equipment (ME): This is the hard ware used by the subscriber to access the network and it has a unique identity number known as International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI).

Subscriber Identity Module (SIM): This is a type of electronic card that is plugs into ME and contains detailed information about the mobile subscriber.

Base Station System (BSS):

BSS is central equipment, which is located at the cell site. It provides the link between MS and NSS. The BSS consists of two operational parts.

Base Transceiver Station (BTS): BTS consists of transmitting and receiving antennas and signaling equipment that provide air interface for a cell to route the call. BTS communicates with the MS.A single BTS can support one or more cells.

Base Station Controller (BSC): All switching functions, which are performed in MSC, are controlled by BSC. It also supports handoff strategies and allocate or release temporary channels for those users whose needed handoff. Several BTSs can be controlled by a single BSC and one MSC can serve many BSCs

Network Switching Subsystem (NSS)

It is the main switching center of GSM network. NSS includes the following:

Mobile Switching Center (MSC): It is the basic unit of NSS, which supports call-switching or routing functions. Its purpose is the same as that of telephone exchange but due to advanced wireless technology, its working is much better than that of exchange. Each MSC provides coverage to a defined geographic area only.

Home Location Register (HLR): For subscriber its a reference data base. Current location of MS, identification numbers and various addresses are maintained in it.

Visitor Location Register (VLR): It̢۪s also a type of database. When an MS moves from home location to a visited location then its location is registered as a visitor in the VLR of visited system and this information is also updated in HLR of MS, by the VLR.

Equipment Identity Register (EIR): Its again a type of database, which contains information about MS equipment and check and identify its international validity of hardware and software to work properly.

Authentication center (AUC): Its a processing center and is normally worked together with HLR.Like HLR its also require to continuously access or update subscribers data. Its main purpose is to provide data security features to authenticate the subscriber.

1. When in doubt, always go out

When possible go outside or to another room to make your call if your call might disturb others. Also, features such as text messaging answering services, call diversion and vibration alert can be used to receive important calls without disturbing others.

2. If you can�t turn it off, use silent mode

If you need to keep your phone on for important calls, then turn it to silent or vibrate mode. It�s the ring of a mobile phone in inappropriate places and times such as at the tennis or in restaurants which annoys people the most.

3. When required turn your phone off and check it�s off

There are some places where people should never talk on a mobile phone or send text messages and where the ringing of a mobile phone or message alert is considered highly unacceptable, such as: movies, stage shows, weddings, funerals, concerts, speeches, classrooms and lectures. In these cases, turn your phone off and remember to check it�s off before you enter the venue. You can always check your voicemail, text messages or your answering service afterwards.

4. Keep your conversations private

People�s sense of personal space varies in each situation. Making a call in a busy pub may be okay, but talking loudly in a confined space like a lift or on a train tends to infringe on others personal space. Be aware of where you are and who you are with and what others are doing before deciding to make or accept a call. In some situations it might be better to send a text message.

5. Speak softly

Mobile phones have very sensitive microphones that can pick even the softest voice, so there is no need to shout. If you are having trouble hearing the other caller, check that you have the volume on your phone set high enough.

6. You don�t always have to answer- use your messaging service

It�s a natural reflex to answer your phone if it rings, however, if you forget to put your phone on silent or vibrate mode and it rings at an inappropriate moment, send the call to voice mail or your answering service (usually by pressing the hang-up key).

7. Talk to the one you�re with

If you receive a call during a conversation, send the call to your voicemail or answering service. Your first priority should be to the person you are with. However, if you are expecting an important call let the person you�re with know before the call arrives and excuse yourself before accepting the call.

8. Don�t send inappropriate messages

Messaging is a great way to communicate, but don�t send offensive or threatening text, voice, picture or any other sort of message, because it is a criminal offence to use a mobile phone to menace or harass someone. Also receivers can save messages and easily identify you as the sender.

9. Respect others' privacy when using in-phone cameras

In-phone cameras shouldn�t be used anywhere a normal camera would be considered inappropriate, such as in change rooms or toilets. You should ask for permission before you take someone�s picture. Also bear in mind that some venues do not allow the use of cameras and may refuse entry to anyone with one.

10. Ban the ring: not the phone

Wherever conversations are normally acceptable, venues can help by asking people to turn their phones to silent or vibrate mode rather than turning it off. This approach will help with compliance, especially for people who need their phone for important calls. Venues can also assist by reminding people to set their phones to silent mode, before they enter.

The Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) has developed consumer tips to assist users to protect themselves against the risk of mobile phone viruses.

This guide explains what viruses are, how they spread, and what can be done about them.

What’s a mobile phone virus?

A mobile phone virus or mobile malware - malicious mobile software - is a computer virus specifically adapted for the mobile phone environment and designed to spread from one vulnerable phone to another.

A virus is a program code that replicates by being copied to another program. Viruses can be transmitted as attachments to an email or in a download file. Some viruses take effect as soon as their code is executed; other viruses can lie dormant. A virus that replicates by resending itself as an email attachment or as a part of a network message is known as a worm.

Viruses can range from benign to quite harmful; they can erase data from the infected phone or send fake messages purporting to be from the phones owner. How prevalent are mobile phone viruses? The current security risk from mobile phone viruses and worms is low.

Until many more smart phones or PDAs are in use, and users of these phones are regularly exchanging executable files, the risk will remain low. The mobile industry takes the threat of viruses very seriously and is continually monitoring its networks and working to protect users from any future risk from mobile phone viruses. There are also some simple measures that individual users can implement to protect themselves.

What can I do to protect my phone?

The following tips can help prevent problems with viruses on your phone:

1. Switch to Bluetooth hidden mode. If your phone has Bluetooth capability, ensure that the Bluetooth capability is switched to hidden or invisible mode unless you specifically need it to be visible. This will help prevent other Bluetooth-enabled devices from finding your phone (unless you grant them the necessary permission) and will therefore help protect your phone from worms that spread using the Bluetooth wireless technology.

2. Exercise caution before opening attachments. When accepting applications sent via Bluetooth, or opening MMS attachments, exercise caution, just as you would when opening an email attachment on your PC, because they may include harmful software. Ensure the application or attachment comes from a known source, and is wary of opening files that have unfamiliar text attached to them, even if they come from someone you know.

3. Only download content from a trusted source. Trusted sources may include operator portals and other well-known brands that offer adequate protection against viruses and other harmful software. Be aware though that, as with emails, malicious or fraudulent users may be able to fake the appearance of a trusted source.

4. Consider anti-virus software. Some software is available to prevent phone viruses. You may wish to consider downloading this software.

5. Contact your phone manufacturer if concerned. If you think you have a virus, call the phone manufacturer’s care line. They can assist you confirm if it is a virus, and help fix the problem.

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)

GPRS protocol is a packet-switch protocol; define for web applications in GSM network. In other words Internet on GSM network is standardized as GPRS network. GPRS has digital structure and this structure based on Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) technique. One TDMA frame has 8 time slots (TSs). These TSs can be allocated to users, and single TS can be shared by several active users for uplink and downlink purposes. Different coding schemes are used to enhance data rate from 9Kbps to 150 Kbps per user, and it takes 0.5 to 1 second. Security features in GPRS is provided by GSM network.

GPRS Architecture

Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) circuit-switch architecture does not support the GPRS packet-switch architecture. Thus, GPRS requires its own network architecture. Several networks and databases e.g. Mobile Station (MS), Base Station Subsystem (BSS), Home Location Register (HLR), Visitor Location Register (VLR) in existing GSM network are modified in GPRS network.

GPRS architecture introduces the following network nodes to GSM architecture.

  • Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN)

  • Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN)

  • Mobile Station (MS)

  • Base Station System (BSS)

  • Home Location Register (HLR)

  • Visitor Location Register (VLR)

1.Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN): In GPRS network SGSN is equivalent to MSC. Packets of data between MSC and Public Switch Data Network (PSDN) are transferred and received by SGSN.

2.Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN): GSM databases e.g. HLR and VLR are supported by GGSN. It also interacts with external packet-switch networks.

3.Mobile Station (MS): In GPRS network MS consists of Mobile Terminal (MT) and Terminal Equipment (TE). A computer attached to MT is called a ME. Through air, MT communicates with the BSS.

4.Base Station System (BSS): In BSS, Base Transceiver Station (BTS) and Base Station Controller (BSC) are modified to support GPRS channel coding schemes BTS is modified while to forward calls to Mobile Switching Centre (MSC) and data to SGSN through Packet Control Unit (PCU), is supported by BSC. One SGSN is served by one BSC.

5.Home Location Register (HLR): In GPRS, HLR contains information about routing. To map an MS to one or more GGSNs, update the SGSN and to store the Internet Protocol (IP) address, this information is accessed by both SGSN and GGSN.

6.Visitor Location Register (VLR): In GPRS. VLR contains the SGSN number and this number indicates the MS currently served by the SGSN.

GPRS Interfaces

Different interfaces are used for routing between network nodes in GPRS.

  • Um interface provides communication between MS and BSS.

  • Gb interface provides connection between BSS and SGSN.

  • Gn interface provides connection between SGSN and GGSN within the same GPRS network.

  • Gp interface provides connection between SGSN and GGSN when they are in different GPRS network.

  • Gi interface provides connection between GGSN and external networks.

  • Gs interface provides communication between MSC and SGSN.

GPRS functional Groups

The functions which are defined in GPRS are following.

  • Network access function: Point to point data transfer, registration of MS with packet data protocols, radio resources for MS communication and charging information about packet transmission, is provided by this function.

  • Packet routing and transfer function: Routing of data between an MS and destination, conversion of GPRS address to external address and forwarding of packets between an MS and GGSN, is provided by this function.

  • Logical link management function: The communication between an MS and the GSM network is maintained by it.

  • Radio resources management function: Radio communication paths are allocated by it.

  • Mobility management function: Current location of an MS is kept by it. When an MS is entered to a new area, all routing and location in formations are also updated by it.

  • Network management function: If provides mechanisms to support network functions related to GPRS.

Advantages

The major advantage of GPRS is that, to access data no dial-up connection is required. It is an inexpensive mobile data service as compared to Short Message Service (SMS) in GSM.

  • write it down somewhere you wont forget
Now in case you lost your phone,call up your service provider and give them this number they will be able to track it down,it might be time consuming since service providers have lot's of complaints to deal with.
